The CalSTRS Pension Election — What You Need to Know Before You Sign
The decision is permanent. This page explains exactly what you are choosing — and what most members never see before they choose it.

A One-Time, Irrevocable Decision
CalSTRS members must elect a pension payout option at retirement. The Member-Only Benefit — also called the Unmodified Benefit or Single Life Annuity — pays the highest monthly amount but stops at the member's death. Survivor option elections permanently reduce the monthly amount in exchange for continued income to a designated beneficiary after death. The election is irrevocable. It cannot be changed after the retirement date — not next year, not ever.

This election is permanent. There are no do-overs.

What Most Members Never See Before They Sign
There is a third path. CalSTRS members who are insurable may be able to elect the Member-Only Benefit — the maximum pension — and use a private life insurance policy to protect their beneficiary, potentially at a lower total cost than the built-in survivor reduction.
This is called Pension Option Planning. It requires a qualified analysis based on individual health, insurability, and financial circumstances. It is not right for everyone. But it should be understood before the election is made.
